Kia Niro: 'The New Electrified Family'

(Agency: Innocean Worldwide; Air date: 04/07/19; Length: 30 seconds)

Two topics I've recently written about on this blog unexpectedly collided in July. Shortly after I'd written about Robert De Niro's appearance in the latest Warburton's ad, and separately about the satirisation of hipsters in ads by the likes of Ribena, Samsung and McDonald's, Robert De Niro turns up dressed as a hipster in the new spot for the Kia Niro electric car. It was bizarre! In the ad, the Oscar-winner mistakenly thinks the script calls for a "trendy version of De Niro", and so arrives decked out in hipster uniform of Dr Martens boots, jeans held up by suspenders, check shirt, geek glasses, and beanie hat. The director explains what is being advertised is actually a "trendy version of the Niro", Kia's electric car. "I'm sorry, my bad" De Niro says as he walks off set.

It made me chuckle to see the 75-year old actor dressed up in Dalston duds and it's nice to see that such a huge star doesn't take himself too seriously, but it did also make me wonder, why the hell does Robert De Niro need to do TV adverts at this stage in his career? And for boring, everyday items like bagels or a family car? My question was quickly answered by an internet search which revealed De Niro is going through a divorce right now - a divorce which could end up being extremely costly for him. If this article is to be believed, he's worth $500 million, of which his wife wants half. Ouch! So it all makes sense now - De Niro's trying to make as much cold hard cash as he can now in order to offset a potentially huge chunk of his fortune he will have to pay out to the soon-to-be ex-Mrs De Niro.

I wonder what will see Robert De Niro advertising next...
